Salty Dog
From Publishers Weekly A boy's building of a boat corresponds with his puppy's growing up. PW said, "Gloria Rand's first book is based on a true story, and it moves along quickly and succinctly; vibrant watercolor illustrations show Salty for the sporty hero he is." Ages 4-8. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Zack, a boatbuilder, acquires a puppy with the intention of making him a seagoing dog. The two ride the ferry between home and work, and tiny Salty wins the crew's affection. At Zack's boatyard, Salty is kept in a box to avoid danger. But as Salty grows too big for a box, he must be left home alone. Missing Zack, Salty digs out under the fence and hops aboard the ferry on his own. Soon he becomes a regular commuter. When Zack finishes his building, Salty is outfitted with a life vest and taken on his maiden voyage on the boat that now bears his name. (There's an inconsistency here: if the grownup Salty acts so responsibly at the boatyard, why does he commute alone and not just hang out with Zack?) This engaging and affectionate tale is illustrated in brilliant watercolor spreads that pay close attention to detail. The rich atmosphere of a seagoing community is nicely evoked, and Salty appears in every illustration, growing from adorable miniscule pup to well-behaved dog. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Reader Reviews We took this book out of the library and my children, ages 7 and 4, loved it so much that I purchased an out-of-print hardbound copy from an Amazon bookseller so we could have a more durable, permanent copy. It is one of those books that I intend to keep past their childhood, like my mom did with me and my sibs, because it is so unusual and cute. I am not all that familiar with the first Salty Dog book wherin the characters are established, but is doesn't matter if one is acquainted with them in order to enjoy the book. In this adventure, Salty and Zack, his cute owner, sail on up to Alaska to sit tight until the winter weather is better and they can head on to warmer waters. This is the story of how Salty adjusts, comes to love hanging out the ferry crew on an Alaska ferry, and has an adventure that is based on a true story that the Rands heard about a dog who falls from an airplane in flight, lands in soft snow, and is happily reunited with his master the next day. The text is easy to follow, but not simplistic. It is a great picture book for both my children, even given their different ages. The beautiful illustrations capture the excitement of the Alaskan wilderness. A real keeper! Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
